Other Pollutant Loads & Sources

The WQIP:2015 has a strong focus on the grazing and farming industries as they are the dominant land use in the Fitzroy Region and contribute the largest loads of pollutants of concern to the Reef. Other industries and land uses that are also a source of pollutants include:

  • intensive animal industries
  • manufacturing and industry
  • mining
  • rural and urban residential
  • transport and communication
  • waste water treatment and disposal
  • ports and shipping.

Compared to agricultural runoff, these sources are relatively small, but can be very significant in local areas and over shorter time periods. Point sources (that have a specific location, rather than covering large areas of the landscape) are generally regulated, that is, there are legal requirements that control waste outputs, particularly in regards to water quality.
